Abstract
This research paper explores the evolving relationship between the physical landscape of Karnataka and its literary representation, arguing that modern Kannada literature functions as a vital cultural response to environmental degradation. By examining the transition from the romanticized nature of the Navodaya period to the urgent ecological warnings found in contemporary works, the study identifies a significant shift in the Kannada psyche. What was once viewed as a site of spiritual refuge and divine beauty is now portrayed as a fragile entity threatened by industrial encroachment and resource extraction. Through a qualitative and eco-critical analysis of foundational figures like Kuvempu and K. Shivaram Karanth, alongside modern visionaries such as P. Tejaswi, the paper demonstrates how the erosion of the “Kannada Nadu” has triggered a profound crisis of identity. The findings reveal that contemporary narratives are not merely passive observations but proactive acts of resistance that utilize indigenous wisdom to critique modern exploitation. The study highlights the role of regional dialects in anchoring cultural heritage to specific geographies. Ultimately, the paper concludes that environmental consciousness in Kannada letters is an intrinsic evolution of a deep-rooted bond between land and language, positioning literature as the essential conscience of the state in an era of global climate change.
