Abstract
This research examines the profound transformation of family structures driven by the global shift from agrarian, ruralbased living to highly industrialized, urban-centered environments. As society gravitates toward dense metropolitan areas, the traditional extended family—once a reliable safety net for childcare and elder care—has increasingly disintegrated. This study investigates the resulting phenomenon of “atomization,” where smaller, autonomous household units struggle to navigate the complexities of city life in the absence of ancestral support systems. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research synthesizes demographic data with qualitative insights from urban residents. The analysis reveals that the rising cost of living, combined with the necessity for dual-income households and high career mobility, has necessitated a reliance on formal institutional support, such as professional childcare and geriatric services, rather than informal kinship networks. The study explores how modern technology and non-kin social circles are attempting to bridge this gap, offering new forms of virtual and community-based solidarity. The findings highlight the urgent need for urban planning to prioritize inclusive social infrastructure. Ultimately, this paper argues that to sustain healthy populations, cities must transition from mere hubs of economic efficiency to environments that foster intentional community, ensuring that individual autonomy does not come at the cost of essential collective support.
